Walter, Painting at the Table
This traditional study by Macke shows a young boy sat at a table drawing. The boy is Macke’s eldest son, Walter: the intimacy of their relationship can be seen in the sentimental gentleness of this portrayal. The study is completed in sepia tones and limited detail in the clothes and furniture. The artist has focussed on depicting highlights in the work, coming from a light source to the boy’s left. There is an extreme highlight in his hair, on his forehead and on the top of his hands.
