This waterscape by Bombois has flashes of vivid colour contained within an otherwise very peaceful, muted work. Bright yellow flashes streak across the surface of the water and red flowers burst through the grass on the right-hand side of the lake. The rest of the work is dominated by a dynamic selection of contrasting greens to portray a lush forest surround. The water runs up through the centre of the work, leading our eye into the distance in which the colour palette fades. The famous flatness of Bombois’ “naïve” style can be seen in the lack of detail in his trees and their reflections, and in the clouds. This lack of detail does not take away from the power of the piece, which effectively presents the viewer with a warm, calm scene which we can imagine in three dimensions.
