This piece is typical of its eponymous style, Suprematism. Suprematism attempted to move as far away as possible from natural forms and realistic painting techniques. The aim was to find a pure form of art. The composition is filled with shapes in red, yellow, blue, black and orange which contrast starkly with the white background. The shapes are not organised in a representational way, they are designed to carry weight in their own right without being references to real life phenomena. The shapes float in the white space at different angles, adding a sense of movement and vivacity to the work.
