Herbert Bayer
Composition around the Space
1928

This “composition around space” by Bayer shows six window-like frames suspended in a clouded sky. The colour scheme consists of various shades of blue and white. Each “frame” is transparent, showing us the frame behind. Some of the frames have cloud-like outlines within them. This abstract composition is peculiar and as viewers we ask what it is that the artist is showing us. Are these windows showing the clouded sky behind them? Are these paintings?  Their suspension and the cleanliness of their lines and angles are reminiscent of the theatre set design typical of the Bauhaus School, of which Bayer was part. Bayer fled Nazi Germany and was one of many artists the regime deemed “degenerate” because of his rejection of realism in favour of a reductive minimalism.
